Modal Verbs

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity, possibility, ability, or permission. They never change form and are always followed by a base verb.

Common Modals

• Can / Could (Ability/Permission): I can swim. Could you help me?
• Must / Have to (Obligation): You must wear a seatbelt.
• Should / Ought to (Advice): You should see a doctor.
• May / Might (Possibility): It might rain later.

Common Mistakes

Do not use 'to' after a modal verb. Correct: I must go. Incorrect: I must to go. (Exception: 'have to' and 'ought to').
