Relative Clauses

Relative clauses add extra information about a noun without starting a new sentence.

Relative Pronouns

  • Who: For people. (The man who called is my brother.)
  • Which: For things/animals. (The car which is parked outside is mine.)
  • That: For people or things (informal). (The book that I read was great.)
  • Whose: For possession. (The girl whose bag was stolen is crying.)

Defining vs Non-Defining

Defining: Essential information. No commas. The students who study hard will pass.
Non-Defining: Extra information. Uses commas. My brother, who lives in Paris, is visiting.
