Prepositions of Movement

These prepositions are used with verbs of motion (go, walk, run, drive) to show the direction of an action.

Key Prepositions

  • To: Movement towards a specific destination. (I am going to the store.)
  • Into: Entering a closed space. (The dog ran into the house.)
  • Onto: Moving onto a surface. (The cat jumped onto the table.)
  • Through: Movement from one side of an enclosed space to the other. (We drove through the tunnel.)
  • Across: Movement from one side of a flat surface/line to the other. (Walk across the street.)
  • Along: Movement in a line next to something long. (We walked along the beach.)
  • Towards: Movement in the general direction of something (destination not guaranteed). (He walked towards the door.)
