Dependent Prepositions (Verbs)

Many English verbs are always followed by a specific preposition. There is often no logical rule for this; they simply must be memorized together.

Common Combinations

  • Apologize FOR: He apologized for being late.
  • Apply FOR: She applied for the job.
  • Believe IN: Do you believe in ghosts?
  • Depend ON: It depends on the weather.
  • Listen TO: I love listening to music.
  • Wait FOR: We are waiting for the bus.
  • Think ABOUT: I am thinking about moving to a new city.
  • Suffer FROM: He suffers from allergies.

Important Rule

If you want to put a verb after these prepositions, it MUST be a gerund (-ing form).
He apologized for being late.
